The Evaluation Committee, set up by the Telecommunications Act 2009, today started the public phase of the process for selecting a successor to the current Telecommunications Commissioner, Mr Bernard Hill.

In advertisements appearing in the main dailies in the Solomon Islands, the Evaluation Committee seeks applicants with significant telecommunications experience in a market driven regulatory setting to take forward all the functions ascribed to the Telecommunications Commission by the Telecommunications Act. Such tasks include maintaining competition in the sector, and oversight of access to the new undersea cable as well as management of important sector resources, such as radio frequencies and numbers.

Mr Howard Lawry, Public Solicitor and Chairman of the Evaluation Committee, said today:

"This is a critical post for the ongoing development of a significant sector in the Solomon Islands. Today we have placed advertisements locally. We have also placed the advertisement on the Commission’s website as part of the global search for candidates who meet what is a demanding profile in terms of experience and expertise. It is anticipated that the new appointment will commence during the second quarter of 2020".

The selection of the Commissioner and the terms and conditions of appointment are undertaken by the statutory Evaluation Committee, which comprises the Public Solicitor, Governor of the Central Bank and the Chairman of the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce. The appointment is effected through the Minister for Communications and Aviation by notice in the Gazette.
